KDU Holds Its 36th General Convocation at BMICH


Colombo: The 36th General Convocation of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) took place at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), marking a significant event in the University’s academic timeline. The ceremony unfolded over two days, culminating in a successful celebration of academic achievements.

According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, the final session of the convocation was honored by the presence of Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), the Deputy Minister of Defence, as the Chief Guest, and Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) as a special guest. The Chancellor of KDU, General Shantha Kottegoda (Retd), alongside Vice Chancellor Rear Admiral Dammika Kumara, warmly welcomed the distinguished guests.

This year’s convocation recognized the academic achievements of 1883 graduands, who were awarded degrees and postgraduate diplomas. The final session saw 155 graduands receiving their parchments and awards for outstanding performa
nces, presented by the Deputy Minister of Defence.

During the event, Major General Jayasekara (Retd) addressed the graduands, emphasizing the importance of using their acquired knowledge in the service of the nation. He highlighted the connection between education, innovation, and national development, underscoring that knowledge becomes truly powerful when applied for the betterment of humanity and national progress.

The Deputy Minister also discussed the government’s efforts to strengthen research and innovation through the upcoming National Research and Development Policy. This policy aims to align academic outcomes with national priorities, with the goal of transforming Sri Lanka into a knowledge-driven economy.

The ceremony was attended by key figures, including the Commanders of the Navy and Air Force, members of the diplomatic corps, former chancellors and vice chancellors, and faculty and non-academic staff of KDU.
