Colombo: As the New Year 2026 begins, the President addressed the nation, emphasizing the significant milestones achieved in 2025 and the challenges that lie ahead. The President described the past year as a period marked by the most extensive reform programme and reconstruction efforts in the country’s modern history.
According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, 2025 saw notable economic achievements, including the lowest budget deficit since 1977 and the highest government revenue since 2007. The country recorded its first-ever primary account surplus and saw export earnings from goods and services climb to nearly USD 17 billion. Government revenue targets were surpassed at unprecedented levels, and the year also witnessed the highest tourist arrivals to the country, marking it as a significant year in Sri Lanka’s economic growth.
Politically and socially, 2025 marked a turning point with efforts to create a clean, people-centred political culture and a nationwide mission titled ‘A Nation United’ aimed a
t combating narcotic drugs. These initiatives were part of the country’s drive to replace long-standing corrupt practices and protect future generations.
The year also tested the nation’s resilience through a severe natural disaster, which saw citizens uniting in solidarity. The President expressed gratitude to Sri Lankans abroad, friendly nations, and domestic services, including the Police and Tri-Forces, for their unwavering support during this crisis. Despite the challenges, there is a shared belief in the nation’s capacity to overcome adversity.
Reflecting on the past, the President called on citizens to embrace the lessons learned and unite with determination and confidence to rebuild the nation. The message concluded with the hope that 2026 would be a year of victory, fulfilling the aspirations of all citizens.
