Pay Commission to Reveal Report Date Soon, Work Continues: Dr Salehuddin

Dhaka: Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed on Tuesday stated that the Pay Commission is continuing its work without interruption, and the government will announce a submission date for its report at an appropriate time. ‘I will speak about the pay scale on the day I feel it is appropriate,’ Dr Salehuddin said.

According to United News of Bangladesh, speaking to reporters after the meetings of the Advisers Council Committee on Public Purchase and the Advisers Council Committee on Economic Affairs at the Secretariat, Dr Salehuddin dismissed speculations surrounding the progress of the Pay Commission, stating that premature comments would not be helpful. He emphasized that the Pay Commission has not stopped its work and is functioning continuously. The issue of regular communication with the government was deemed secondary to the commission’s ongoing efforts.

Dr Salehuddin mentioned that the 21-member commission is examining the matter in detail, considering all relevant factors. He described the task as substantive and requiring detailed analysis. He also indicated that discussions with senior officials could occur shortly, after which the commission would present its findings.

Separate inputs are being prepared for different services, Dr Salehuddin added, noting that distinct reports are being crafted for the judiciary and defense, with a sub-committee dedicated to the latter. He addressed questions about the timeline by stating that a specific date for the report’s submission would be communicated later. The announcement of this date would be made officially, he assured, while also highlighting that implementation would follow as a separate stage.

Dr Salehuddin clarified that receiving the report is one phase, and the government will carefully examine it before proceeding with implementation. He also clarified the Bangladesh Bank governor’s role, noting that the central bank has no authority over the national pay scale and that the pay scale is a matter that involves the entire government.

The Pay Commission has been open to feedback and interaction with stakeholders, with many submitting representations and meeting the commission. This openness was encouraged to ensure all perspectives are considered. Dr Salehuddin reiterated the government’s commitment to treating the pay scale revision as a serious and comprehensive exercise, with decisions to be taken only after thorough scrutiny of the commission’s recommendations.
