Dhaka: The Indian government has issued an advisory for the dependents of officials stationed at its High Commission in Dhaka and other Missions across Bangladesh to return to India due to security concerns. Despite this precautionary measure, the High Commission and Missions outside Dhaka will remain open and continue operating at full capacity.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the decision comes in response to media reports highlighting the current security situation. A source from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated, “Given the security situation, as a precautionary measure, we have advised the dependents of officials in the Mission and Posts to return to India.” The source emphasized that despite the advisory, the Mission and all Posts in Bangladesh will continue to function at their full strength.
Relations between Bangladesh and India have experienced occasional tensions, particularly following a regime change in Bangladesh on August 5, 2024. A notable development affecting bilateral ties is the situation involving cricket, which has traditionally been a symbol of friendly relations between the two countries. The controversy arose when Bangladeshi cricket star Mustafizur Rahman was excluded from the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In retaliation, Bangladesh banned the broadcast of IPL matches, citing safety concerns for its players. Furthermore, Bangladesh is seeking to relocate its matches for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 from India to Sri Lanka. These developments have contributed to the growing diplomatic strain between the neighboring countries.
