Dhaka: BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman pledged to improve living conditions for the residents of Korail Slum, promising the construction of multi-storey buildings with registered flats for long-time inhabitants if his party returns to power. “Politics must improve the lives of ordinary people,” he stated during a doa and milad mahfil at the Mohakhali T and T Colony field.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Tarique expressed his party’s commitment to addressing the housing challenges in Korail Slum, contingent on their victory and divine blessings. He plans to construct tall buildings and provide registered flats to families who have resided there for many years to ensure permanent housing in Dhaka. He further emphasized the need for prayers to accomplish these goals.
In addition to housing, Tarique announced plans to establish schools, a playground, and basic healthcare facilities in the area. He emphasized that these efforts depend on divine assistance and the prayers of the people. The programme was arranged by Korail residents in memory of BNP’s late Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
Tarique, contesting the 13th parliamentary election from Dhaka-17, sought prayers from his constituency’s residents before starting his campaign. He reiterated that politics should serve ordinary people, aiming to improve daily life and seeking Allah’s mercy and public support for his initiatives.
He emphasized his personal connection to Korail, describing himself as “a son of the area,” and recalled past hardships during the Awami League regime. Tarique outlined future plans, including introducing a ‘Family Card’ for women and a ‘Farmer Card’ to support agriculture. He stressed equal access to education and healthcare for children in informal settlements.
Gratitude was expressed to Korail residents for organizing the doa mahfil for Khaleda Zia. Tarique cited the late Shaheed Ziaur Rahman’s contributions to agriculture and water management as inspirations for his vision. He pledged to expand healthcare services and empower women in Korail Slum.
Tarique’s wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, attended the event, receiving applause from the audience. Chief election agent Abdus Salam conducted the event, noting it was organized at the request of Korail residents. Local representatives highlighted daily challenges, including water and electricity issues, while praying for Khaleda Zia’s salvation.
The event included a khatme-Quran by Hizb students, with Maulana Mohammad Ibrahim leading the munajat. Tarique’s respectful gesture towards Maulana Ibrahim received social media appreciation. Later, he attended another doa mahfil in Banani and plans to launch his election campaign in Sylhet after visiting local shrines.
