Dhaka: National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser for the South Region and Comilla-4 candidate, Hasnat Abdullah, has alleged that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) initiated a ‘practice match’ for capturing polling booths by attacking NCP’s election campaigns and its candidate in Dhaka-18.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Hasnat Abdullah claimed that the assault on their candidate, Ariful Islam Adeeb, and the disruption of campaign activities under the BNP’s banner conveyed negative implications for the electoral process. He made these comments following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka.
Abdullah expressed concerns over the attacks, suggesting they represented an attempt to suppress and dominate polling stations. He noted the aggressive actions and interference with rival campaigns could jeopardize the possibility of holding a participatory election, posing a significant challenge for the Election Commission.
Ayman Rahat, another NCP repr
esentative, reported that a formal complaint was submitted to the Chief Election Commissioner, accusing BNP activists of targeting the NCP candidate’s campaign in the Dhaka-18 area. The NCP further alleged violations of the electoral code of conduct, citing unauthorized posters in Dhaka-17 and rallies extending late into the night without repercussions.
Additionally, the NCP raised concerns with the Election Commission over the appointment of individuals with controversial histories as presiding officers for the upcoming elections.
