Colombo: At the invitation of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu arrived in Sri Lanka this afternoon, marking the start of a two-day state visit. The visit underscores the strengthening of diplomatic ties between the two nations, coinciding with the 61st anniversary of diplomatic relations.
According to News.LK, President Muizzu and his delegation received a warm reception upon their arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake. The welcoming party was led by Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya, alongside Minister of Science and Technology Professor Krishantha Abeysena, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra, and Maldives High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Masood Imad. A special guard of honour was presented by the Sri Lanka Air Force, and children representing various communities lined the route holding national flags of both countries to greet the visiting president.
This marks President Muizzu’s inaugural visit to Sri Lanka since assuming office in 2023. As part of the visit’s formalities, he signed the commemorative guest book at the airport’s VIP terminal.
The official welcome ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow at the Presidential Secretariat, where President Muizzu will meet with President Dissanayake. The bilateral discussions are expected to focus on enhancing the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Both leaders are anticipated to sign several Memoranda of Understanding to expand cooperation in multiple sectors.
In addition to the diplomatic engagements, President Muizzu and his delegation will attend a special business forum in Colombo. Accompanying the President are First Lady Sajida Mohamed, the Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs, several senior Cabinet ministers, and high-ranking officials.
