Colombo: The Vesak festival, which commemorates the three pivotal milestones in the life of Lord Buddha-his birth, attainment of enlightenment, and passing (Nirvana)-is the most sacred celebration for Buddhists worldwide. The people of Sri Lanka, heirs to a culture enriched by Buddhist heritage, join Buddhists globally in observing this occasion.

According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, Buddhism is a philosophical teaching that conveys a timeless message of peace. The Dhamma preached by Gautama Buddha is based on the Four Sublime Virtues: loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity. These principles highlight that peace, coexistence, and reconciliation are supreme teachings not only expounded by Buddha but also by all enlightened teachers.

Buddhism emphasizes that to establish peace externally, inner spiritual peace in individuals must first be secured. This approach, as advocated by Buddhism, guides society towards collective noble objectives and is more relevant today than ever before
. This was also the message brought to Sri Lanka by Vietnamese monk Venerable Pannakara Thero, who recently undertook a pilgrimage on foot across the country.

The celebration of Vesak is not merely a religious observance but also a cultural festival reflecting Sri Lankan identity and creativity. The programs organized alongside Vesak, such as almsgiving, meditation, and Dhamma sermons, as well as devotional offerings and festivities including dansals, devotional songs, lanterns, and pandals, contribute to mutual understanding, reconciliation, and coexistence among communities.

Inviting people to embrace Buddhism’s values of non-violence, compassion, and loving-kindness, heartfelt wishes are extended for a blessed Vesak festival where all hearts may find peace and serenity through the grace of the Dhamma.
