Dhaka: The Election Commission (EC) has officially announced the schedule for the upcoming presidential election, with the voting process scheduled to take place on August 20. This announcement was made during a press conference held at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.

According to United News of Bangladesh, nomination papers for the presidential race are to be submitted between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm on August 13. The scrutiny of these nomination papers is scheduled for August 16, while candidates have until August 18 to withdraw their candidacy. The voting itself will occur from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on August 20, within the session chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has been designated as the returning officer for this election.

Previously, the EC received the voter list for the presidential election from the Parliament Secretariat following its request. It is important to note that voting will not occur if there is only a single candidate. Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from his position as President on July 24, leading to Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad assuming the role of acting president.

The EC, under the guidance of Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, conducted a meeting with acting Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal on July 28. This meeting was in accordance with the Presidential Election Act, 1991, which requires consultation with the Speaker before announcing the election schedule. As per Article 123(2) of the Constitution, an election to fill the vacant office of the President must occur within 90 days following the vacancy due to resignation.
