Jahangirnagar university: Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have temporarily suspended an archaeology student over allegations of making derogatory comments on social media about the July 2024 mass uprising and maintaining links with a banned organisation. The university also formed a five-member investigation committee to probe the allegations.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the decisions were announced in two separate office orders signed by Acting Registrar Dr ABM Azizur Rahman. The suspension order detailed that Sharafat Sharik, a 54th batch (2024-25 academic session) student of the Department of Archaeology and a resident of Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq Hall, was temporarily suspended under Section 4(1)(b) of the ‘Jahangirnagar University Students’ Discipline Ordinance, 2018′.

In a separate order, the university constituted the probe committee to investigate the student’s alleged derogatory remarks on the July 2024 mass uprising posted on social media, his alleged links with the banned organisation, identify those involved, and establish the facts surrounding the incident. Prof Dr Md Abdul Halim of the Department of Botany will head the committee.

The other members of the committee include Prof Dr Abu Sayeed Md Mostafizur Rahman of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Prof Dr Md Kamruzzaman of the Department of Zoology, and Md Rezaul Alam, System Analyst of the ICT Cell. Associate Prof Dr Abdus Sattar of the Department of Philosophy will serve as the member secretary.

The university administration has tasked the committee with submitting its report, along with specific recommendations, within 15 working days.
