Dhaka: State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Thursday expressed concerns over India’s decision to allow convicted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Awami League (AL) leaders to engage in activities from Indian territory, which she described as conspiratorial. She highlighted the potential impact on bilateral relations if India continues to permit such actions without intervention.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Shama Obaed called for India to be more considerate of the sentiments of the Bangladeshi people. She urged the Indian government to take a decisive stance on the presence and activities of the Awami League leaders within its borders. Shama emphasized that continued inaction could lead to heightened tensions between the two nations.
The State Minister accused the Awami League, currently banned in Bangladesh, of attempting to reignite old political narratives that associate Bangladesh with extremism. She argued that these efforts are aimed at gaining international attention and questioned whether India would support such endeavors. Shama called for bilateral ties based on equality and mutual respect, underscoring the democratic nature of both countries.
Rejecting claims of militancy, Shama Obaed defended Bangladesh’s elected government and dismissed the allegations as lacking credibility. She criticized the Awami League’s record on democracy and human rights, referencing allegations of enforced disappearances and killings during the party’s rule.
Shama Obaed reiterated Bangladesh’s desire for stronger relations with India, urging New Delhi to clarify its position on the activities of Sheikh Hasina and other Awami League leaders. She warned that the issue could affect bilateral ties and noted that Bangladesh has already conveyed its concerns through official channels.
The State Minister expressed hope for constructive engagement with India, highlighting the need for continued dialogue on various bilateral issues, including water, energy, and border concerns. She stressed that Bangladesh’s relationship with India is multifaceted and extends beyond the current dispute.
Regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible participation in the BRICS Summit, Shama Obaed stated that Bangladesh remains interested in the grouping. However, any decision on the Prime Minister’s attendance would depend on his schedule. She noted that Bangladesh is currently chairing BIMSTEC and views BRICS as an important multilateral platform.
