Dhaka: National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor and Chief Whip of the opposition Nahid Islam on Friday criticized the BNP government, attributing Sheikh Hasina’s ability to hold a press briefing in Delhi to the government’s diplomatic failures.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Nahid described the situation as a diplomatic failure, accusing the foreign ministry of mere posturing by issuing a press release regarding Hasina’s Delhi briefing. He suggested that the use of grand language in the press release is ineffective without tangible diplomatic actions.

Nahid made these remarks following his attendance at a photo exhibition titled “July Still Not Over,” organized by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at the residence of the opposition leader. He expressed concern over the cooperation between the Awami League and the Delhi government, emphasizing that the Indian High Commission should have been summoned and condemned by the government.

Furthermore, Nahid urged the government to disclose its diplomatic strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future. He alleged that the government is veering towards authoritarianism and stressed the need for structural reforms to prevent such tendencies.

Citing historical instances, Nahid claimed that the Awami League has failed in previous attempts to reassert itself, particularly mentioning the year 1996. He warned that any new attempts at authoritarianism would face public resistance.

The visit was attended by NCP’s chief organiser for the northern region Sarjis Alam, spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, and other senior leaders.
