NC proposes common facilitation mechanism for disaster response

The Nepali Congress has suggested the government that it effectively mobilized the concerned agencies to ensure supply and availability of essential goods, including drinking water, medicine and fuel in the wake of recent disasters and imminent festivals.

The NC also proposed a ‘common facilitation mechanism’ comprising security agency, private sector, local level political parties and organizations so that the management of post-disaster response would be smooth.

The nonstop rainfall occurred in over a dozen of districts on September 27-28 caused landslides, floods, and inundations that took toll on human life and property, thereby warranting prompt responses from government side.

The NC submitted a 34-point memorandum before Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, incorporating suggestions and drawing attention for rescue and relief distribution, rehabilitation and reconstruction.

The NC team led by party president and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba met PM Oli and furnished recommendation that could be
enforced on the basis of immediate, short- and long-term needs.

The rescue, relief and rehabilitation should be intensified, the memorandum stated.

The government is asked to install bailey bridges in the necessary places, repair and reconstruct damaged roads, establish coordination and facilitation. Robust coordination among three tiers of governments, and curbing black-marketing and adulteration with market monitoring are also stressed by the NC.

Meanwhile, NC chipped in Rs 5 million to the Fund for assisting the disaster survivors.

The party which is also the ruling partner urged all sides- private sectors, association and individuals- to contribute to the national fund for assisting the disaster survivors at this urgency. It underlined the need for rising above the difference to extend support, citing the national disaster.

As done in the previous crises as Covid-19, and Jajarkot Earthquake, NC this time provided Rs 5 million to the national coffers by collecting the money from party’s lawmakers- eac
h providing 15 days’ salary.
