Colombo: The deep depression currently situated over the southwest Bay of Bengal, approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Trincomalee as of 2:30 a.m. on November 28, 2024, is poised to intensify into a cyclonic storm. It is projected to move slowly in a north-northwestward direction, drawing closer to the eastern coast of Sri Lanka.

According to News.LK, the influence of this weather system will bring cloudy skies across most parts of the island. The Northern Province and Trincomalee District are expected to experience very heavy showers and strong gusty winds. Rainfall exceeding 150 mm is anticipated in certain areas within these regions, while other parts of the island, including the North Central and North-western provinces, as well as Matale and Kegalle districts, could see heavy showers surpassing 100 mm.

Moreover, very strong winds ranging between 60-70 kmph are predicted for Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces, including Trincomalee District. Other regions of the island may experie
nce strong winds of about 40-50 kmph. Authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions to minimize damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
