Dhaka: The murder of Mohammad Azizur Rahman Mosabbir, a former joint general secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, has been linked to a business dispute in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar, as per the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Additional Commissioner (DB) Md Shafiqul Islam disclosed details of the investigation during a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre. The DB has identified the individuals involved in the killing and conducted operations across various districts including Dhaka, Gazipur, and Mymensingh.
Among those arrested are Jinnat, 24, one of the gunmen, and Mohammad Billal Hossain, the alleged main coordinator. Abdul Kadir, 28, who allegedly facilitated the suspects’ escape, is also in custody. The suspects reportedly scoped the crime scene before the attack.
Mohammad Riaz, 32, was apprehended for allegedly aiding in the investigation. Authorities seized a numberless motorcycle used in the crime and Tk 6,000 from the suspects. The firearm used remains unrecovered, though the suspects have confessed to their roles.
Shafiqul Islam addressed potential political or underworld motives, noting that while political motives are under review, initial evidence suggests a business dispute was the primary cause. The suspects reportedly lack formal political ties but are known to have business and political associations in Karwanbazar. The second shooter, Rahim, is still at large.
The DB is investigating claims of Tk 1.5 million being sent from abroad for the murder. Additionally, they are examining an incident involving a human chain organized by Mosabbir against extortion, which led to clashes and legal proceedings.
The murder occurred last Wednesday around 8 pm, when gunmen shot Mosabbir near Hotel Super Star on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue. Abu Sufian Bepari Masud, accompanying Mosabbir, was also injured. Mosabbir had held significant roles within the political party, and his wife, Suraiya Begum, has filed a case following the murder, citing previous death threats against him.
