Defence Secretary Reveals Tri-Forces’ Role in 78th National Independence Day Celebrations


Colombo: The arrangements and preparations for the upcoming 78th National Independence Day celebrations were outlined at a media briefing held today at the Department of Government Information. The briefing was attended by the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Hon. Minister A. H. M. H. Abayarathna; the Defence Secretary, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd); the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Mr. Aloka Bandara, Tri-Forces Commanders, the Inspector General of Police, and other senior state officials.

According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, during the briefing, the Defence Secretary detailed the Tri-Forces’ involvement in the celebrations, scheduled for 04 February 2026 at Independence Square in Colombo. He noted the participation of the Sri Lanka Army, Navy, Air Force, and the National Cadet Corps, which will provide ceremonial contingents, bands, cultural segments, parade elements, and essen
tial support roles.

The Defence Secretary also mentioned that the Sri Lanka Navy will be responsible for the ceremonial gun salute at Galle Face Green, while the Sri Lanka Air Force will conduct a fly-past featuring 412 and 212 helicopters displaying the National Flag. Rehearsals are set to commence from 30 January to 02 February to ensure a flawless execution of the event, with the main ceremony to be presided over by His Excellency the President on the morning of 04 February.

In addition to their ceremonial responsibilities, the Tri-Forces will engage in programmes supporting the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ initiative, demonstrating their dedication to national development, public service, and civic duty.
