Colombo: The Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), graced the official launch of the first edition of ‘Sri Lanka’s maritime heritage and historical significance’, held at the Main Auditorium of Sri Lanka Navy Headquarters yesterday.
According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, welcomed the Deputy Minister and other distinguished guests upon their arrival at the venue. This new publication is a collaborative effort by the Sri Lanka Navy, leading academics, and key national institutions. It aims to enhance public awareness of Sri Lanka’s rich maritime heritage and the role of the surrounding seas in shaping the nation’s history, culture, and development. The collection offers insights into Sri Lanka’s maritime journey from prehistoric times to the post-colonial era, emphasizing transoceanic interactions across the Indian Ocean and beyond. The editorial board is led by Senior Professor Raj Somadeva, whose guidance has been crucial in bringing the publication to life.
During his address as the Chief Guest, the Deputy Minister praised the Sri Lanka Navy for its ability to unite diverse stakeholders in collaboration to document and promote the nation’s maritime heritage. He highlighted the publication as a remarkable contribution, structured around key themes such as Trade and Commerce, Culture and Nature, Underwater Technology and Heritage, and Case Studies. The Deputy Minister emphasized that the book serves as a monumental account of Sri Lanka’s maritime story.
The launch ceremony was also attended by the Commanders of the Army and Air Force, former Navy Commander Admiral Priyantha Perera (Retd), as well as Directors General of Archeology, Central Cultural Fund, and National Archives, senior Naval Officers, distinguished academics, and invitees.
