Deputy Minister of Defence Inaugurates 80th CISM General Assembly and Congress


Colombo: Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) officially inaugurated the 80th General Assembly and Congress of the International Military Sports Council (CISM) at a ceremonial event held at The Grand Maitland Hotel in Colombo today.

According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, the event was graced by the presence of key figures from the Defence Services Sports Boards, including the Commanders of the Sri Lanka Navy and Air Force, as well as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army. This prestigious global event unites military sports leaders and delegates from CISM member nations to deliberate on key issues that will shape the future of military sports. It serves as a vital platform for fostering international cooperation, unity, and camaraderie among armed forces through the universal language of sport.

In his inaugural address, Major General Jayasekara (Retd) emphasized the role of military sports in promoting professionalism, unity, and mutual respect among nations. He highlig
hted the significance of Sri Lanka hosting such a high-level international forum for the first time, noting it as a testament to the country’s commitment to global peace and military diplomacy through sports.

The week-long conference will include a series of discussions, strategic planning sessions, and cultural exchanges aimed at enhancing the role of sports in building bridges across borders. Key topics on the agenda include the modernization of military sports, expanding inclusivity, and promoting physical and mental well-being among service members.

Founded in 1948, CISM is one of the largest multidisciplinary sports organizations in the world, with over 140 member countries. It aims to promote friendship and solidarity among the armed forces through sports competitions and collaborative initiatives.
