Dhaka: A Dhaka court has sentenced Monir Hossain to death for the murder of his wife, Shakila Khatun Shoma, in 2017. Judge Sadekin Habib Bappi of the Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-6 delivered the verdict on Tuesday.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Monir Hossain, a resident of the Badda area in Dhaka, was found guilty of killing Shoma, with whom he had been married since 2003. The couple had one daughter. The prosecution detailed that Shoma was persistently pressured by Monir to bring money from her family, resulting in her family paying Monir Tk 11 lakh over time.

The tragic incident occurred on October 6, 2017, when an altercation between the couple escalated. Monir attacked Shoma with a sharp weapon, inflicting critical injuries by slitting her throat. She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by doctors.

Shoma’s mother, Akter Banu, subsequently filed a case against Monir at the Badda Police Station. Monir was arrested and later confessed to the crime. On December 7, 2017, police submitted a chargesheet against him. After thorough examination of records and testimonies from 15 witnesses, the court concluded the trial by sentencing Monir to death.
