Dhaka: A court in Cumilla has sentenced a 75-year-old man, Ali Akbar alias Kailla, to five years in prison for attempting to rape a seven-year-old child. The verdict was delivered by Judge Md Abdul Hannan of the Cumilla Child Violence Tribunal. In addition to the prison sentence, Ali Akbar was fined Tk 10,000, as confirmed by state lawyer Abul Kalam Faraz.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the incident occurred on the afternoon of April 5, 2025. The child had gone to bathe in the Viktala Miji Bari area of Elliotganj South Union in Daudkandi Upazila. During this time, Ali Akbar allegedly took her to a room in his house and attempted to assault her. The child’s cries alerted her mother, who intervened and rescued her.

Following the incident, locals detained Ali Akbar and notified the police. The child was initially taken to the Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex for primary treatment and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for further care. The child’s mother, Nurun Nahar, subsequently filed a case against Ali Akbar at the Daudkandi Model Police Station.
