Heavy downpour batters life in Chandpur; 277 mm rains recorded


Heavy and torrential rains since Friday morning have inundated the main roads and lanes in Chandpur town, causing suffering to commuters and disrupting normal life.

Locals the waterlogging was created due to faulty drainage, making it almost impossible to move.

Roads are devoid of vehicles, and people are largely staying indoors unless absolutely necessary.

Vikas Ghosh, a vendor selling fermented milk drink near Court Station are, expressed his frustration, saying, “I have been here since 6 am with my drinks, but by 9 am, I haven’t sold anything. There are no people around.”

Almost all shops in the city, restaurants and vegetable markets remained closed. Major roads like Cumilla Road, Palpara, Alimpur, Kadamtala, and several residential areas such as Rahmatpur, Chowdhuripara, Nazirpara, and others went under water.

Several houses in the New Market and Old Market areas were submerged.

Shah Mohammad Shoaib, a meteorologist of the Chandpur Weather Office, said 277 mm of rains were recorded in 24 hours from 9am on Friday to 9am today, the second-highest rainfall in the country this year.

A supervisor at Chandpur Launch Ghat, Ali Asgar said there were very few people on a Dhaka-bound launch due to bad weatehr.

There were few passengers on buses, said Shafiq Bhuiyan and Kamal Patwari, bus owners of Chandpur bus stop.
