Dhaka: An HSC examinee died at a private hospital in Dhaka on Friday morning after he was allegedly attacked with sharp weapons following his vocal opposition to drug consumption in Sirajganj’s Raiganj upazila. The deceased, Abdur Rahman, 20, was a student at Raiganj Business Management and Technical College and the son of Md Firoz, a sack trader at Dhangara Bazar under Raiganj Municipality.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the incident occurred after Abdur Rahman and his elder brother, Md Hasan, confronted Titon Sheikh, the son of local trader Md Tara Sheikh, on Tuesday night. The brothers attempted to stop Titon from consuming drugs in their neighborhood, leading to a heated altercation.

During the dispute, Titon allegedly attacked Abdur Rahman and Hasan with a machete and a Burmese knife, resulting in critical injuries for both brothers. They were initially taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for treatment. As Abdur Rahman’s condition deteriorated, he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and subsequently moved to a private hospital in the capital.

Despite medical efforts, including the amputation of one of his hands, Abdur Rahman succumbed to his injuries at around 8 am on Friday. Meanwhile, his brother Hasan continues to receive treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Bogura hospital.

Raiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Ahsanuzzaman confirmed that police have inspected the scene and that legal proceedings are currently underway.
