Baku:Commissioner of the Inland Revenue Department Nandana Kumara announced that every citizen aged 18 and above must obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) as per a gazette notification issued in 2023. This announcement was made during a media briefing at the Department of Government Information aimed at increasing awareness about the upcoming deadline for submitting income tax returns for the 2025/2026 assessment year.
According to News.LK, Commissioner Kumara clarified that obtaining a TIN does not obligate every individual to register for or pay income tax. Only those with an annual income exceeding Rs. 1.8 million are required to register for income tax under the current legal framework.
Individuals earning below the specified income threshold may submit an application, along with an affidavit, to cancel their income tax registration. The Commissioner emphasized the importance of taxpayers submitting their income tax returns on time for the 2025/2026 assessment year to meet their civic duties.
