Thakurgaon: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir celebrated his 79th birthday at his Kalibari residence in Thakurgaon, surrounded by his wife, Rahat Ara Begum, and family members. He marked the occasion by cutting a cake and engaging with supporters, reflecting on his political journey and the upcoming election.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Fakhrul emphasized the significance of the upcoming election scheduled for February 12. He mentioned his presence in Thakurgaon is part of his campaign efforts and expressed his commitment to his constituents. “Please pray for me so that I can continue to serve the people of my area and work for the country till the end,” Fakhrul stated.
Born on January 26, 1948, in Thakurgaon, Fakhrul is the son of late Mirza Ruhul Amin, a former Muslim League leader and minister in the Pakistan government. Despite his age, Fakhrul remains active in politics, sharing that he has “stepped into 79” with a smile, acknowledging his long journey in political life.
Fakhrul’s birthday celebration was modest, as in previous years, with a cake-cutting event held early Monday at his family’s request. He expressed no personal ambitions, focusing instead on economic freedom and a democratic environment for Bangladesh. He highlighted the importance of unity and a free, fair election to build a prosperous Bangladesh.
The BNP leader also reminisced about the 15-year movement against fascism and the student-led mass uprising in July 2024, viewing these events as pivotal moments for Bangladesh’s progress. Since Friday, BNP leaders and supporters nationwide have extended their wishes for his health and longevity.
Fakhrul’s early involvement in leftist politics during his student life led him to complete his education in Economics at Dhaka University. He later transitioned from teaching to politics, serving as personal secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister in 1979 and holding various political roles, including the chairman of Thakurgaon Municipality in 1988.
Rising through BNP ranks, Fakhrul became the party’s secretary general in 2016, having previously served as acting secretary general. His political career includes being elected MP from Thakurgaon-1 in 2001 and Bogura-6 in the 11th parliamentary election, though he did not accept the latter position due to BNP’s rejection of the election results. Fakhrul’s political journey has also seen him imprisoned several times during the Awami League’s tenure in power.
