Colombo: The Prajashakthi National Movement, a key initiative by the government aimed at eradicating poverty and promoting economic justice through social empowerment, is set to benefit from a new digital system designed to enhance its implementation across all districts.
According to News.LK, an awareness programme was held at Temple Trees for Deputy Directors and Assistant Directors of Planning from various Divisional Secretariat divisions, focusing on the effective execution of the Prajashakthi National Programme. At the event, Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake highlighted the significance of the movement as the government’s flagship programme for poverty eradication and development. He disclosed that Rs. 180 billion has been earmarked for rural development in 2026, emphasizing the pivotal role of Community Development Councils in utilizing these funds efficiently.
Senior Additional Secretary to the President Kapila Janaka Bandara explained that Community Development Councils have already started identifying and prioritizing development proposals for 2026. He outlined the importance of creating Integrated Village Development Plans that incorporate community-wide proposals, stressing the need for scientific methods in project selection to ensure sustainable outcomes.
Former High Court Judge Ranga Dissanayake addressed the necessity of eliminating bribery and corruption within the public service, highlighting the accountability of officials in fostering societal progress. Additionally, Mr. Somasiri Ekanayake, Director of the Presidential Secretariat, detailed the roles and responsibilities of planning directors in the Prajashakthi Movement.
Ms. Saradanjali Manoharan, Senior Assistant Secretary, introduced the digital system and project management aspects of the programme. The event also included discussions with officials to address challenges and clarify upcoming stages of the initiative.
The gathering was attended by key figures including Secretary Ministry of Public Administration S. Aloka Bandara, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Rural Development Menaka Herath, and other senior government officials.
