Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya Urges Commitment to Peace and Development in Sri Lanka

Velanai: The people of Sri Lanka should no longer be burdened by conflict, emphasized Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring peace and stability across the country. The Prime Minister stressed that both the government and public services must diligently fulfill their responsibilities to address the needs of the citizenry.

According to News.LK, Prime Minister Amarasuriya made these remarks during public gatherings in Velanai, Nallur, and Vadamarachchi. She highlighted persistent challenges in the Northern Province, including issues related to infrastructure development such as roads, drinking water supply, agriculture, unemployment, education, and health sectors. The Prime Minister noted that while these issues are primarily the responsibility of local governments and provincial councils, the duties have not been adequately executed.

The Prime Minister questioned the progress made since the end of the war 16 years ago, asking whether the lives of residents in the North and East have truly improved. Although the central government provides funds to provincial bodies, she emphasized the need for a transparent mechanism to ensure proper utilization of these funds for relevant projects.

As local government elections approach on May 6th, the Prime Minister urged citizens to elect representatives committed to serving the public and free from fraud and corruption. She assured that the government is actively working to lift the country from its current economic challenges and acknowledged that there is a long journey ahead. Despite high prices of goods, she promised that ongoing efforts would soon yield benefits for the people.

The Prime Minister also announced measures to increase the basic salary of public servants as outlined in this year’s Budget, calling for a public service that dedicates itself to the populace. Her vision is for a government and public service that truly belong to the people.

Reflecting on the nation’s history, Prime Minister Amarasuriya expressed determination to prevent a recurrence of past bloodshed and conflict. The government, she vowed, is committed to fostering peace throughout the country.

The event was also attended by Minister of Fisheries Mr. Ramalingam Chandrasekar, alongside several Members of Parliament and local representatives from the North.
