Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Highlights Investment Potential at ‘Invest Sri Lanka’ Business Forum in Bangkok


Bangkok: The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Thailand, in collaboration with the Thai-Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce, organized the ‘Invest Sri Lanka’ business forum at the Grande Centre Point Surawong Hotel in Bangkok. The event was held in the presence of Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and gathered over 80 prominent Thai and international business leaders.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Sri Lanka, the forum was convened on the sidelines of the 6th Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit, held in Bangkok from 02 to 04 April 2025. It served as a platform to promote Sri Lanka as a destination for trade and investment. Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, in her keynote address, highlighted Sri Lanka’s political and economic stability and emphasized the country’s potential to become ‘the world’s next success story’. She invited international investors to join Sri Lanka’s growth journey, underscoring the gov
ernment’s commitment to building a resilient and inclusive economy.

The Prime Minister also mentioned that the Government of Sri Lanka has observed economic recovery following the pandemic and economic crisis. She noted the country’s new era of infrastructure development and a skilled workforce. Additionally, she expressed optimism for a record-breaking year for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector due to a surge in foreign tourist arrivals in early 2025.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, welcomed the guests and business representatives, acknowledging Thailand’s economic engagement with Sri Lanka. She noted that Thailand contributed USD 97 million in Foreign Direct Investment to Sri Lanka between 2008 and 2024. Ambassador Edirisinghe encouraged Thai investors to take advantage of the investment landscape in Sri Lanka, highlighting legal frameworks like the Bilateral Investment Treaty and the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement.

The event included remarks from the President of the Thai-Sri
Lanka Chamber of Commerce, Dilan Samarakoon; Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, Poj Aramwattananont; and Chairwoman of the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Thailand, Vibeke Lyssand Leirvåg. All speakers expressed confidence in Sri Lanka’s economic trajectory and urged Thai and international investors to explore opportunities in the country.
