Bangui: The Sri Lanka Aviation Unit, operating under the United Nations mandate in the Central African Republic (CAR), has successfully completed a critical Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC) mission in challenging conditions.
According to News.LK, the mission was initiated following an urgent request to evacuate two United Nations personnel who had sustained combat-related injuries in the Zemio area. Utilizing a Mi-17 helicopter (UNO 325P), the mission exemplified exceptional operational readiness and professionalism. The helicopter was piloted by Wing Commander Nelson De Silva with Flight Lieutenant Arunoda Ekanayake as Co-Pilot. The aircrew also included Squadron Leader Sandeepa Wijayathunga, Sergeant Senevirathne WCN, and Corporal Rodrigo DVPM. The Aeromedical Evacuation Team, led by Group Captain Sujith Perera and assisted by Flight Sergeants Sumedha KW and Karunadasa RDH, provided crucial in-flight medical care.
The mission faced significant operational challenges, including dusty landing conditions and a rapidly changing tactical environment near the Zemio Permanent Operating Base. Despite the constant threat and need for precision landing, the aircrew exhibited courage, sound judgment, and exceptional airmanship.
The operation was meticulously planned and coordinated, reflecting the Captain’s adaptability and decision-making skills. The mission, lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes, culminated in the safe extraction and transport of the injured personnel to Bangui for further medical treatment.
