Singapore: The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore celebrated Deepavali, the “Festival of Lights,” at the Sri Senpaga Vinayagar temple with over 150 members of the Sri Lankan expatriate community in attendance. The event took place on 09 November 2024, marking a significant cultural celebration for the community.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Sri Lanka, the event began with blessings from the Chief Priest of the Temple, Sri Sabesan Kurukkal. Following the blessings, the traditional oil lamp was lit by the Guest of Honour, Neil Parekh, a Member of Parliament of Singapore, alongside officials from the Singapore Government and representatives of Sri Lankan associations.
In his welcoming address, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Singapore, Senarath Dissanayake, emphasized the spiritual significance of Deepavali. He highlighted its timeless and universal message, particularly relevant in today’s world marked by conflict. Referring to the Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple’s Sri Lankan heritage
dating back to the 1850s, the High Commissioner noted that the celebrations at this historic venue symbolized the shared cultural values and strong people-to-people connections between Sri Lanka and Singapore.
Guest of Honour MP Neil Parekh expressed his pleasure in participating in the celebrations organized by the Sri Lankan High Commission. He remarked that such events would enhance cultural ties between Sri Lanka and Singapore. As Chairman of the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce, MP Parekh also expressed interest in promoting business relations between the two nations.
The celebration featured a cultural performance that captivated the audience with its vibrant expression and rhythm, encapsulating the spirit of Deepavali and the cultural richness of the community. The evening concluded with a traditional vegetarian dinner, aligning with the spirit of Deepavali.
