Sylhet: BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman urged voters to back the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ in the February 12 election to ensure governance based on justice and warned against potential vote manipulation as he campaigned in Sylhet city on Thursday. Tarique emphasized the BNP’s commitment to running the country justly, citing the Holy Prophet (pbuh) as their example.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the BNP leader addressed a large election rally at Alia Madrasa field in Sylhet city. He alleged attempts to manipulate votes from abroad through postal ballot misuse, mentioning reports of ballots being taken away in various countries, including the Middle East. Tarique accused the Awami League of previous vote fraud on 5 August 2024 and warned of similar plots resurfacing.
He urged vigilance against foreign conspiracies to steal votes, highlighting signs of such plots already visible. Tarique also referenced the sacrifices in the anti-government movement and the July mass uprising, recalling party members who were killed or disappeared during the struggle against the Sheikh Hasina regime.
Tarique mentioned missing Sylhet BNP leader M Ilias Ali and noted that 13 people died in Sylhet during the 2024 mass uprising. He stressed the importance of unity in overcoming conspiracies, referencing the 5 August 2024 events as proof of Bangladesh’s resilience. The crowd responded with chants as Tarique asked if they would resist again if necessary.
He assured that a BNP-led government elected on 12 January would prioritize justice and fairness, outlining proposed initiatives like family and farmer cards, health schemes, youth employment, and education and healthcare reforms. Tarique highlighted the BNP’s historical efforts to restore democracy and expressed a commitment to continue these efforts if elected.
Tarique pledged to support farmers by reviving canal excavation programs for improved irrigation and water management, citing past successes under Ziaur Rahman. He accused the previous government of misusing public funds under the guise of development and emphasized the need to prioritize Bangladesh over foreign interests.
The rally, attended by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other leaders, began shortly before midday. Tarique spoke for approximately 23 minutes, reiterating the ‘Take Back Bangladesh’ campaign’s focus on democracy, women empowerment, job creation, and support for farmers.
