Sri Lanka Bolsters Economic Ties with Malaysia Through Colombo Port City Promotions

Kuala Lumpur: The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Kuala Lumpur, in collaboration with Colombo Port City, spearheaded a series of investment promotion activities in Malaysia during February and March 2025. These initiatives were orchestrated to fortify economic relations, attract Malaysian investors, and spotlight Sri Lanka’s investment prospects.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Sri Lanka, Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Kuala Lumpur, M.I. Mohamed Rizvi, introduced Colombo Port City to Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) and engaged in discussions with Deputy Minister Chin Tong Liew. The meeting highlighted key investment opportunities within the Colombo Port City and underscored the significance of rectifying Sri Lanka’s trade imbalance with Malaysia by enhancing Malaysian investments in Sri Lanka’s burgeoning economy.

The High Commission also organized Business-to-Business (B2B) sessions with the Malaysia-Sri Lanka Business Council (MSLBC) and connected with the Malaysian-Ceylonese business community. These sessions served as a platform for potential investors to directly engage and learn about the advantages of investing in Colombo Port City.

Furthermore, discussions were facilitated with the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KLSICCI) to dispel misconceptions, promote Sri Lanka’s economic prospects, and reinforce trade and investment partnerships with Indian-origin entrepreneurs in Malaysia.

A pivotal meeting took place with Dato’ Seri Utama Mukhriz bin Tun Dr. Mahathir, former Chief Minister of Kedah and a prominent business leader. The discussions aimed at connecting with high-net-worth investors in Malaysia, strengthening investment ties, and expanding Sri Lanka’s economic influence in the region.

General Manager of Investment Promotion and Marketing, Tian Zheng, along with Executive Director of Marketing at CHEC Port City Colombo Pvt. Ltd., Shalaka Wijeyaratne, participated in these discussions alongside the Acting High Commissioner.
