Colombo: Sri Lanka hosted a joint press conference during the state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a significant moment in the diplomatic relations between the two countries. Prime Minister Modi was warmly welcomed by Sri Lankan President Dr. Harini Amarasooriya, recognizing him as the first head of state to visit since the new government was formed.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Sri Lanka, the visit underscores the deep-rooted friendship and historical ties between Sri Lanka and India, countries separated by a mere 50 kilometers of ocean yet connected by centuries of cultural, religious, and political bonds. The relationship was highlighted through shared acknowledgments of India’s role as a regional and global leader, with Sri Lanka expressing genuine admiration for India’s progress and leadership.

The discussions between the two leaders covered a range of topics, including economic cooperation, defense, digitalization, and infrastructure development. Sri Lanka expressed gratitude for India’s support in economic recovery, highlighting the conversion of a line of credit into a grant for railway infrastructure as an example of bilateral cooperation. Additionally, the two nations are set to inaugurate significant projects in Anuradhapura, including the Sampur Solar Power Plant and digital identity initiatives.

The visit also emphasized defense cooperation, with assurances that Sri Lankan territory would not be used to undermine India’s security. The leaders addressed the long-standing fisheries issue, advocating for sustainable solutions to illegal fishing practices.

In recognition of Prime Minister Modi’s contribution to bilateral ties, Sri Lanka announced the conferral of its highest honor, ‘Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana,’ on him. This gesture symbolizes the enduring friendship and support provided by India to Sri Lanka.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to shared development goals, emphasizing cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, and social security agreements. The visit concluded with a focus on strengthening democracy, stability, and economic resilience in Sri Lanka, with India pledging continued support for these objectives.
