Colombo: The 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) unfolded in a vibrant celebration at Independence Square in Colombo, marking the presence of Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), as a special invitee. The event was organized by the High Commission of India in Colombo.
According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, since its proclamation by the United Nations in 2014, June 21 has been globally recognized as International Yoga Day. This year’s celebration embraced the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” highlighting the interconnection between individual well-being and the planet’s health.
The morning event began with the arrival of dignitaries and participants, followed by prayers led by Most Ven. Mahasangha, Dr. Wimalsara Maha Thera, and his disciples. A video presentation recapping ten years of IDY in Sri Lanka set the tone for the proceedings.
A guided yoga session served as the core of the programme, featuring standing and seated asanas, pranayama, and meditation. This
session provided participants a moment of unity, balance, and introspection, showcasing yoga’s universal appeal across ages, backgrounds, and cultures.
His Excellency Santosh Jha, High Commissioner of India, attended as the Chief Guest. Alongside Deputy Minister Major General Jayasekara (Retd), he participated in the felicitation ceremony, presenting certificates to yoga institutes and receiving mementoes in appreciation of their presence.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks and light refreshments, leaving attendees rejuvenated and inspired by yoga’s timeless message of harmony and holistic health.
