President Dissanayake Calls for National Unity in Wake of Recent Disaster


Trincomalee: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has urged citizens to unite with determination to rebuild Sri Lanka following a recent disaster that severely impacted the nation’s economy. President Dissanayake emphasized that it is the duty of every citizen to confront the challenge and contribute to the nation’s restoration.

According to Ministry of Defence, President Dissanayake expressed his gratitude to the Sri Lanka Navy for their significant contribution during the disaster. He particularly lauded the Navy’s courageous rescue operations at the Kala Oya, where naval personnel risked their lives to save those in peril. The President honored those who made the ultimate sacrifice in these efforts.

These statements were made during the commissioning and passing-out parade at the Trincomalee Naval and Maritime Academy. Upon arrival, President Dissanayake, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, received full naval honors.

The ceremony saw the commissioning of eight directly commissioned officers from I
ntake 2024/03, thirty-three officers from the 40th intake of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, and twenty-five officers from the 65th cadet intake of the Trincomalee Naval and Maritime Academy. Awards and ceremonial swords were presented by the President to officers who excelled during training.

President Dissanayake also highlighted the Navy’s crucial role in combating drug trafficking, a major issue confronting the country. He affirmed the government’s commitment to counter this menace and called for collective action from citizens to protect the nation.

The President stressed the importance of responsibility among all citizens, emphasizing that each role is crucial for national stability. He urged everyone to fulfill their duties diligently, recognizing that no responsibility is secondary in the nation-building process.

Acknowledging the discipline, courage, and honor associated with the Sri Lanka Navy, the President encouraged the newly commissioned officers to embrace their responsib
ilities with dedication. He extended best wishes for their future careers.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, including the Governor of the Eastern Province, Deputy Minister of Defence, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, commanders of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as other senior officials and families of the newly commissioned officers.
