Dhaka: The BNP Standing Committee is set to gather tonight to deliberate on the current political landscape and internal organizational matters. The meeting, scheduled for 9 PM at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office, will be presided over by BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, as confirmed by BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the meeting is deemed significant despite not being part of a previously scheduled plan and lacking a fixed agenda. This assembly comes at a time when there are strong indications that Tarique Rahman might soon be elevated to the position of party chairman. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had earlier hinted during an interaction with journalists in Sylhet that Tarique Rahman could be formally elected as the party chairman imminently.

Tarique Rahman took on the role of acting chairman in 2018 following the incarceration of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. A member of the BNP Standing Committee, who preferred to re
main anonymous, stated that tonight’s discussions will focus on the nation’s political climate, organizational issues, election-related topics, and strategies for managing dissent within the party. The member also suggested that the party might move to formally appoint Tarique Rahman as the full chairman of the BNP, in accordance with the party’s constitution, following the passing of Khaleda Zia.
