Matthew McConaughey Trademarks Voice and Image to Block AI Misuse

Los angeles: Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has trademarked his image and voice to protect them from unauthorized use by artificial intelligence platforms.

According to United News of Bangladesh, clips of McConaughey, including his famous line ‘alright, alright, alright’ from the 1993 film “Dazed and Confused,” have been registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office. Lawyers for the “Magic Mike” star stated that this is the first time an actor has utilized trademark law to safeguard their likeness from potential AI misuse. They noted that while there is no current example of his image being misused, the action aims to prevent any future unauthorized copies.

McConaughey’s decision follows incidents where several celebrities, including Scarlett Johansson and Taylor Swift, were targeted with fake videos, audio, and images created using AI tools. Despite this, the actor is not opposed to generative AI and has invested in ElevenLabs, an AI voice technology company, which has produced an AI audio version of his voice with his consent.

McConaughey first gained prominence with “Dazed and Confused” and went on to star in films such as “A Time to Kill,” “Contact,” and “Interstellar.” He earned the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in “Dallas Buyers Club.”
