Dhaka: Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday expressed confidence in the possibility of conducting a fair and credible election under the current circumstances, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for any eventuality. He noted the positive attitude and mutual harmony among election contestants, hoping this approach will be maintained.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Prof Yunus made these remarks during a high-level meeting focused on the overall law-and-order situation in anticipation of the upcoming 13th parliamentary election and the referendum on the implementation of the July National Charter. The meeting was held at the Chief Adviser’s office and chaired by Prof Yunus. Following the meeting, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam briefed reporters at the Foreign Service Academy.
Advisers Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Abdul Hafiz, and National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman were among those present. Prof Yunus assured that the government would fully support the Election Commission (EC) to ensure a fair election, describing the process as a major national challenge and a potential historic achievement.
Prof Yunus highlighted the need for flawless execution on election day, scheduled for February 12, aiming to set a benchmark for future elections in Bangladesh. He stressed the importance of following the EC’s instructions closely and ensuring that the Ministry of Home Affairs leads in maintaining law and order. Measures such as body cameras, CCTV, and central control room monitoring will be implemented to ensure transparency and coordination.
He also noted the significant interest from both local and international media and observers, with 51 out of 59 registered political parties participating. EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed revealed that representatives from 26 countries, including a 300-member observer team from the European Union, have been invited to observe the polls.
Ahmed pointed out the challenge posed by misinformation in cyberspace, emphasizing the need for responsible media conduct to prevent the spread of rumors. Additional time will be needed for counting different types of ballots, including party symbol, referendum, and postal ballots. Campaigning will be allowed until 7:30 am on February 10, he added.
