U-19 World Cup: Bangladesh Faces Exit After Defeat to England

Bulawayo: The Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team has been eliminated from the ongoing ICC U-19 World Cup following a seven-wicket defeat to England in their Super Six match at the Queens Sports Club.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Bangladesh’s performance in this crucial encounter was marked by a collapse under pressure, as they were bowled out for 136 runs in 38.1 overs. England comfortably chased down the target, reaching 137 for 3 in just 24.1 overs, with 155 balls remaining. This loss marks Bangladesh’s third consecutive exit before the semi-finals since their victory in 2020.

In the Super Six stage, Bangladesh began with a disadvantage, having only one point from the group stage due to a loss against India and a washout against New Zealand. They faced England, who started this round with four points, making a win essential to maintain their semi-final aspirations.

Choosing to bat first, Bangladesh struggled from the outset. Opener Jawad Abrar was dismissed in the first over, while Rifat Beg (31
) and captain Azizul Hakim (20) managed a 46-run partnership. However, the innings faltered after English spinner Farhan Ahmed broke this stand. Wicketkeeper Mohammad Abdullah (25) provided some resistance, but the rest of the lineup failed to contribute significantly, with England’s Morgan taking 3 for 28 to dismantle the lower order.

In England’s innings, Bangladeshi pacer Al Fahad offered an early breakthrough by dismissing opener Joseph Moores, with a catch by Swadhin Islam after Samiun Basir’s earlier drop. Fahad also removed Ben Dawkins (27), but England captain Thomas Rew’s unbeaten 59 led the successful chase. His 78-run partnership with Ben Mayes (34) ensured Bangladesh’s elimination from the tournament.

The Junior Tigers are set to face Zimbabwe in a consolation match in Harare on January 31 before heading home.
