Sri Lankan President Calls for National Unity and Economic Reform at 78th Independence Day Celebration

Colombo: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake delivered a compelling speech at Sri Lanka’s 78th National Independence Day celebrations, emphasizing the urgent need for national unity and comprehensive economic reforms. The President’s address highlighted the theme of ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka,’ urging citizens to harness the nation’s historical strengths and human resources to achieve true independence through economic freedom.

According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, President Dissanayake reflected on the sacrifices made by ancestors in the struggle against colonial rule, asserting that independence remains incomplete without economic sovereignty. He called for a renewed focus on sovereignty, self-determination, and freedom as the foundation for national rebuilding, while also acknowledging the importance of shedding certain aspects of recent history to strengthen the country’s connection to its roots.

The President emphasized the strategic importance of Sri Lanka’s maritime zone and natural resources, but pointed out that the nation’s greatest asset lies in its human resources. He advocated for transforming this potential into a workforce capable of competing globally, prioritizing knowledge and progress over ignorance and division. The President stressed the role of art, literature, history, and modern technology in developing a well-rounded and knowledgeable population, calling for transformative changes in the education sector.

In his address, President Dissanayake underscored the need for unity among Sri Lanka’s diverse cultural, religious, and ethnic communities. He condemned racism and extremism, advocating for national unity as a critical component of rebuilding. The President also highlighted the necessity of upholding the rule of law, ensuring that every citizen has equal rights and that public confidence in legal systems is maintained.

Environmental preservation was another focal point of the President’s speech. He stressed the importance of sustainable management of the Central Highlands and natural resources, warning against development paths that harm the environment. The President called for international cooperation to enhance Sri Lanka’s global standing and ensure security and prosperity for its people.

President Dissanayake highlighted the significant economic progress made in 2025, citing record-high government revenue and economic stability. However, he stressed the importance of translating these achievements into improved living standards for citizens, emphasizing that economic growth must benefit all Sri Lankans equitably.

The President urged extensive dialogue with various stakeholders to shape a sustainable and inclusive economic path for Sri Lanka. He concluded by calling on citizens to unite in rebuilding the nation, emphasizing the need for collective action to achieve long-term prosperity.
