Battaramulla: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed the government’s unwavering commitment to building a peaceful and developed nation during the 17th National War Heroes’ Day Commemoration held at the War Heroes Memorial in Battaramulla. The event, which honors the sacrifices made by those who fought for the nation’s freedom, was attended by numerous dignitaries and family members of fallen and disabled war heroes.
According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, President Dissanayake emphasized the importance of moving forward with unity, development, and prosperity, as envisioned by the war heroes. He highlighted Sri Lanka’s long-standing adherence to Buddhist values of loving-kindness, non-violence, and compassion, which transcend ethnic divisions and promote a unified society. The President questioned the potential of building an exceptional nation upon these inspiring principles.
Addressing the attendees, President Dissanayake reiterated the government’s choice to abandon destructive and divisive paths, focusing instead on safeguarding the lives of citizens and steering the country toward victory. He paid tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s pride and emphasized the responsibility to fulfill their aspirations for peace and development.
The commemoration, organized annually by the Ranaviru Seva Authority, featured an increased opportunity for war hero families to participate. The President acknowledged the immense contributions of the heroes and their families, emphasizing the need to honor their sacrifices by building a nation founded on fairness, the rule of law, and equal privileges for all citizens, regardless of ethnicity or religion.
President Dissanayake also stressed the significance of Sri Lanka’s multicultural identity and the need to bridge divides for sustainable peace and coexistence. He encouraged citizens to unite against racism, religious extremism, and divisive forces, fostering a country where the language of war is replaced by peace and harmony.
The commemoration was attended by high-ranking officials, including Deputy Minister of Defence Retired Major General Aruna Jayasekara, Deputy Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Sunil Watagala, Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retired), and other senior military officers. Their presence underscored the collective commitment to honoring the sacrifices made by the nation’s war heroes and working towards a brighter future for Sri Lanka.
