Dhaka: Bangladesh and the Maldives have reaffirmed their longstanding friendship, emphasizing their strong people-to-people ties and close cooperation that have been at the core of their bilateral relationship over the years. The two nations explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration during Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman’s first official visit to Mal© from July 25 to 27.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the discussions between the two countries focused on enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest, such as health, education, trade and investment, tourism, labor, and human resource development. They also deliberated on regional and international developments, reiterating their shared commitment to mutual prosperity.
During his visit, Dr. Khalilur attended the 61st Independence Day Parade of the Republic of Maldives at Republic Square in Mal© as a special guest. The parade featured a ceremonial march-past and displays by various branches of the Maldives National Defence Force, celebrating the country’s discipline and national pride. The day concluded with a cultural program and a fireworks display.
In support of environmental sustainability initiatives, Dr. Khalilur participated in the planting of a Christina tree at Lonuziyaarai Park in Mal©, as part of the Five Million Trees Project led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The ceremony was attended by Maldives Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam and Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef. Dr. Khalilur commended the initiative and highlighted Bangladesh’s pledge to plant 250 million trees over the next five years.
The visit also included a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, where Foreign Minister Iruthisham welcomed Dr. Khalilur and thanked him for attending the Independence Day celebrations. During the meeting, Dr. Khalilur announced Bangladesh’s gift of 300 kilograms of Khirsapat mangoes and 20,000 saplings to support the Maldives’ “Five Million Trees Programme,” symbolizing the enduring friendship between the two countries.
Foreign Minister Iruthisham expressed appreciation for the gesture, noting that the visit reflects the enduring partnership between Bangladesh and the Maldives, providing renewed momentum for expanding bilateral engagement. Both ministers expressed confidence in advancing a forward-looking partnership for the mutual benefit of their citizens.
