Dhaka: Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed concern over the lack of change in the country’s administrative culture despite the July mass uprising, but voiced hope for transformation under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Fakhrul shared his observations during a discussion marking the 2nd anniversary of the July mass uprising in the capital.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Fakhrul, who is also the BNP secretary general, lamented that corrupt practices and obstruction of progress persist in the administration. He noted that many individuals have merely adapted to the new environment without genuine change, despite their claims of being proponents of the July revolution.
The event was organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting at Tatya Bhaban, featuring the unveiling of a Press Information Department publication and a photo exhibition. Fakhrul emphasized the importance of a mindset shift across all societal levels to realise the revolution’s potential and highlighted the dedication of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in striving for this change.
Fakhrul praised Rahman’s leadership, citing his efforts to promote cleanliness and civic responsibility as examples of the change he is advocating. However, Fakhrul acknowledged the challenges posed by the entrenched administrative culture that reverts to old habits once oversight is removed.
Reflecting on the sacrifices of the July revolution, Fakhrul stressed the importance of honoring those who lost their lives by using their sacrifices as a foundation for meaningful change. He recounted poignant stories of loss and underscored the heavy price paid by the nation.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon, who chaired the session, highlighted the historical context of the July mass uprising, which emerged from a long political struggle against authoritarian rule. He called for vigilance to prevent exploitation of the uprising’s spirit for personal or political gain.
