Sylhet: A convoy carrying leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP), including its Chief Organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam, came under attack in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet district on Thursday, resulting in damage to one vehicle. The incident occurred around 2:45 pm as the convoy was en route to Kanaighat after attending a program at the Golapganj municipality auditorium, where they met with families of those killed during the July 2024 mass uprising. No injuries were reported.

According to United News of Bangladesh, witnesses stated that a group of miscreants assaulted the convoy near Noor Mansion, shattering the rear glass of one of the vehicles. Sarjis alleged in a Facebook post that the attackers were activists of the BNP. Local sources indicated that youths, believed to be part of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), surrounded the convoy, chanting slogans like “fake, fake” and “NCP is fake.”

Party sources revealed that Sarjis and other central NCP leaders visited Golapganj earlier to discuss with families affected by the July movement. JCD activists reportedly gathered in the Golapganj Chowmuhani area before the convoy arrived, shouting slogans against the party. These slogans continued as NCP leaders exited the municipality auditorium, according to witnesses.

At one point, several individuals allegedly advanced towards the convoy, throwing bricks at one of the vehicles. Police later dispersed the crowd and ensured the safe departure of the NCP leaders from Golapganj, confirmed Officer-in-Charge of Golapganj Police Station Mohammad Sabed Ali. “The NCP leaders left Golapganj safely,” he stated.

This incident follows a similar attack on NCP leaders in Habiganj, allegedly by JCD activists during a July march program. The party had announced a protest for Wednesday, but its central leaders’ convoy reportedly faced repeated police obstructions in Sreemangal of Moulvibazar and Bahubal of Habiganj while traveling to the district amid Section 144.
