Dhaka: US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor has called on international partners to enhance their contributions to the Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, which currently shelters over one million Rohingya refugees. Speaking during a visit to the camp on Friday, Gor emphasized the United States’ ongoing support and encouraged global partners to increase their aid efforts.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Gor was accompanied by US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen and led a 14-member high-level delegation to the Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. The delegation arrived at Cox’s Bazar Airport around noon and visited Camp-4 to observe the humanitarian operations conducted by the World Food Programme (WFP).
In addition to his visit to the camp, Gor met with Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on Thursday evening and is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday. During his meeting with the Foreign Minister, Gor discussed strengthening the US-Bangladesh relationship and noted positive developments in bilateral relations.
Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman highlighted the ongoing engagement between Bangladesh and the United States, stating that relations are progressing in a positive direction. He emphasized the continuous dialogue and collaboration at all levels between the two countries.
In related news, the United States has updated its travel advisory for Bangladesh, lowering it from Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) to Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution). This change reflects increased confidence in Bangladesh’s security environment and stability. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of Bangladesh attributed the improved advisory to productive discussions between Gor and Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman.
Bangladesh’s government views the updated travel advisory as recognition of its efforts to maintain security and stability, further enhancing international travel, trade, and investment opportunities. The decision also highlights the positive trajectory of the partnership between Bangladesh and the United States, underscoring the progress achieved under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership in strengthening law and order across the country.
