55 Lakh Beneficiaries to Receive Affordable Rice Under Government Initiative

Dhaka: The government has initiated the distribution of rice under its Food Friendly Programme starting from August 1, aiming to ensure food security for low-income individuals and stabilize the market.

According to United News of Bangladesh, a total of 55 lakh card-holding beneficiaries across 495 upazilas will receive 30 kg of rice per month at a subsidized rate of Tk 15 per kg. This distribution will span six months, covering August to November and March to April, as outlined in a PID handout issued on Monday.

In a bid to combat malnutrition, especially improving the nutritional status of women and children, the government is providing fortified rice to approximately 25.29 lakh beneficiaries in 248 upazilas. Additionally, regular rice is being distributed to 29.71 lakh beneficiaries in 247 upazilas.

The government is also continuing its rice and flour distribution under the Open Market Sale (OMS) programme through 1,108 centres, which include shops and trucks nationwide. The nation’s food reserves remain robust, with foodgrain procurement activities ongoing.

As of August 2, the total food stock is recorded at 2,349,385 metric tonnes, comprising 1,966,148 metric tonnes of rice, 280,010 metric tonnes of wheat, and 152,109 metric tonnes of paddy. The government is steadfast in its commitment to ensuring food security, reducing malnutrition, and enhancing social safety net programmes for the welfare of the public.
