Dhaka: Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, who recently received conditional bail in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), may possess passports from multiple countries, according to Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed. Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, Salahuddin revealed that the government suspects Benazir’s international passport holdings and has directed their legal team to petition for the cancellation of his bail.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the government has proactively engaged with their law firm in the UAE, while the Home Secretary has initiated discussions with the UAE Ambassador. Salahuddin mentioned that the authorities are still awaiting a certified copy of the bail order to understand its conditions fully. The government has also instructed its legal representatives to present Bangladesh’s extradition documents to the UAE court, pressing for a revocation of Benazir’s bail.

When questioned about the rationale behind Benazir’s bail despite Bangladesh’s repatriation efforts, Salahuddin refrained from commenting on the court’s decision without detailed knowledge of the order. Addressing concerns over recent discoveries of bomb-like objects in Kamalapur and Ashulia, the home minister reassured the public that there is no significant cause for alarm. He attributed the incidents to attempts by certain groups to disrupt communal harmony, emphasizing the effective response by law enforcement and the Bomb Disposal Unit. Investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible, with authorities maintaining vigilant oversight of the situation.
