DU Initiates Action Against Teachers for Alleged Involvement in Hasina’s Return Bid

Dhaka: The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have commenced legal and administrative proceedings against teachers allegedly implicated in efforts to facilitate the return of fugitive convict Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh and to revive activities of the banned political party, Awami League.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the DU authority announced in a press release on Wednesday that actions would be taken against those involved, in compliance with the university’s existing rules and the nation’s laws. The initiation of these actions follows reports in various media outlets suggesting that 404 teachers from 22 universities across the country were engaged in these efforts.

The Dhaka University authorities expressed deep concern over the matter, labeling such activities as violations of the country’s laws and judicial processes, and characterizing them as anti-state. The university highlighted that these actions aim to create instability within both the university and the nation, generate confusion, and challenge state institutions and the constitutional system.

DU reaffirmed its commitment to upholding free thought, the rule of law, democratic values, and the constitutional framework. However, it emphasized that using freedom of expression to justify anti-state or unlawful activities is unacceptable, particularly when such actions have the potential to destabilize the university or the country.

The university authorities stated that involvement in these activities is inconsistent with the dignity and responsibility expected of university teachers. The alleged activities are classified as misconduct and moral delinquency under the Dhaka University Order, 1973, the First Statutes of Dhaka University, and the Dhaka University Ordinance and Regulation.

Under the relevant sections of the DU Ordinance, the university may impose disciplinary actions, including compulsory retirement, removal from service, or dismissal, on those found guilty. DU reiterated its “zero-tolerance” policy towards activities that undermine the country’s sovereignty, laws, judicial decisions, and the university’s dignity.

The authorities stressed that no individual would be exempt from accountability for violating laws or university regulations, regardless of their identity or position. The university called upon teachers, students, officers, employees, and all concerned to act responsibly, respect the law, and contribute to maintaining peace, stability, and a democratic environment in the country.
