Dhaka: The American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) has announced its commitment to facilitate and mobilise a significant US$5 billion investment in Bangladesh over the next five years. This ambitious pledge was made during a meeting between the AmCham Executive Committee, led by President Syed Mohammad Kamal, and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the meeting highlighted AmCham’s long-standing role in strengthening economic and commercial ties between Bangladesh and the United States since 1996. The organisation emphasised its dedication to promoting a transparent, competitive, and investment-friendly business environment. AmCham’s member companies have already invested over US$5 billion in Bangladesh and contribute more than 20% to the nation’s tax exchequer, showcasing their significant role in the country’s economy.
AmCham expressed its desire for the Prime Minister’s leadership and the government’s support in creating an enabling environment to achieve the investment target. It acknowledged the government’s progress in enhancing the business climate, particularly with the fiscal year 2026-27 reform package aimed at practical investment facilitation.
Welcoming various measures such as time-bound approvals, single window implementation, digital tax administration, and simplified customs procedures, AmCham stressed the necessity of greater long-term policy predictability in priority sectors to bolster investor confidence. It also praised the enactment of the Personal Data Protection Act and National Data Governance Act, underlining the importance of effective implementation and public-private collaboration.
The delegation outlined the potential of the US-Bangladesh Reciprocal Trade Agreement framework to deepen bilateral economic engagement and strengthen Bangladesh’s position in global value chains. AmCham advocated for a broader strategic economic partnership encompassing technology, AI, digital innovation, healthcare, renewable energy, and financial-sector modernisation.
To achieve these goals, AmCham proposed establishing a Digital Economy Advisory Forum/Task Force and a Public-Private Competitiveness Council to identify bottlenecks, support reforms, and strengthen investor confidence. It reiterated its readiness to collaborate with the government as a strategic partner, offering investor intelligence, supporting policy efforts, and promoting Bangladesh’s reforms and investment opportunities internationally.
The delegation extended an invitation to the Prime Minister to attend the opening ceremony of the 30th US Trade Show as the chief guest. This event will be jointly hosted by AmCham Bangladesh and the US Embassy in Bangladesh, further highlighting the ongoing collaboration between the two nations.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman welcomed AmCham’s continued engagement and acknowledged its vital role in the economic development of Bangladesh. The AmCham delegation included notable business leaders from various sectors, underscoring the diverse interests and capabilities of the chamber in fostering economic growth.
