Dhaka: The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will not take place in the 2026-27 season as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) seeks to revamp the tournament after enduring years of financial losses, rule violations, and franchise-related issues, BCB President Tamim Iqbal announced on Thursday. Speaking at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Tamim confirmed that the upcoming season would be on hold.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Tamim revealed that the BCB had incurred approximately Tk 40 crore in losses over the past two years while managing franchise-related challenges. He emphasized the necessity for the board to generate revenue from franchise cricket instead of facing financial setbacks. “Until we fix this, doing a tournament at a loss is not important,” he stated.

The BCB’s decision aims to allow the board time to address the ongoing issues with the tournament rather than rushing into another problematic season. Tamim noted that the process of overhauling the BPL could take anywhere from six to 12 months. As chairman of the ICC’s franchise cricket committee, Tamim stressed the importance of running Bangladesh’s franchise tournament effectively.

He further mentioned that while he could assemble five teams quickly, his priority remains ensuring fair cricket and upholding the BCB’s integrity. Despite anticipating criticism for the decision, Tamim expressed his commitment to the overhaul. He acknowledged the potential financial impact on players due to the BPL’s absence, but maintained that establishing a stable foundation for the tournament was crucial.

The BCB plans to finalize the franchise selection and other organizational processes by April-May, with a goal to reintroduce the BPL under a sustainable model in the following year.
