Colombo: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced plans to enhance the Sri Lanka Police by providing necessary facilities to transform it into a highly respected service during the 160th Police Day commemoration held at the Thimbirigasyaya Field Force Headquarters.
According to News.LK, the President promised a proper promotion scheme, a new uniform by mid-next year, risk allowances for officers, infrastructure development, and recruitment of needed human resources. Reflecting on the 160-year history, he praised the vital role of the Police in maintaining public peace and security during various crises and emphasized the current priority of combating the illicit drug trade and organized crime.
The President highlighted the Police’s success in conducting the highest number of drug raids and arrests over the past two years, and the return of 74 armed criminals from overseas with international assistance. He assured legislative and infrastructural support to transform Sri Lanka into a peaceful nation. The event featured a ceremonial police welcome, the launch of the Sri Lanka Police Mobile App, and the unveiling of the upgraded police website. A commemorative stamp and promotion letters for officers were also presented.
Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya presented a commemorative gift to the President in acknowledgment of his participation. Addressing the gathering, President Dissanayake recognized the long history and challenges faced by the Police, urging officers to strengthen public trust and address criticisms. He stressed the importance of combating drug trafficking and organized crime as a social responsibility and warned against officers being compromised by criminal networks.
The President commended the Police for their achievements in drug seizures and bringing international criminals to justice. He noted the need for expedited investigations and judicial processes to ensure timely justice. The Government’s commitment to enhancing the Police’s efficiency, legislation, and infrastructure was reiterated, with plans to recruit 10,000 new officers and provide risk allowances.
He acknowledged career progression concerns and promised a proper promotion system recognizing merit. The Government’s plans include purchasing new vehicles, constructing modern facilities, and integrating technology into operations. The President concluded by emphasizing the need for a modern, respected Police service that fosters a constructive relationship with the public.
